Television is playing an indispensable role and becoming part and parcel of day to day life. Now-a-days most of the children are getting indulged themselves into watching TV than participating in any sort of outdoor games such as football, tennis etc. which can result to obesity and social inhibitions. In India, on an average, kids are spending three hours a day to watch television or to use electronic gadgets likes Tables, smart phones etc. This trend is increasing over the time.
No one can deny the fact that watching TV will provide immense pleasure and great relief to children after hectic day of study. Many TV channels are offering numerous programs that can make kid as couch potato. There are many reasons for this situation to arise. Firstly, as in many cases, both the parents are working and not be able to allocate much time to entertain their kids. Another reason for not sending kids for any outdoor activity is kind of security reasons like fear of abduction. Gradually when the child grows this shows a big negative impact on their studies because they are already addicted to TV programs and can’t spend their valuable time on studies. Apart from that people tend to eat more food when they are sitting before TV sets. Lack of physical activity and consumption of more junk food can exacerbate the situation.
On the other hand, parents need to consider this as a serious issue to restrict the amount of time their child is spending on watching TV. There are many ways to restrain kids from sticking to TV set. Parents can plan some fun activities at home to distract them from electronic media and also to provide some sort of exercise. Parents need to provide more attention on their kids by facilitating them in a healthy manner.
To conclude, kids should inculcate health habit of exercising and physical sporting apart from sticking to TV sets.

In Nigeria, typically children above four and below fifteen years of age, spend more than 20 hours per week, in watching television. It is also seen that they do spend as much as only seven hours per week on physical activities.
These days, Kids are glued to televisions when they are at home. This is not just the case with Britain, but it is common even in Nigeria. But kids are also not to be blamed as well due to the number of kids specialty channels on the increase. Kids have variety of options and they are not just bored with the programs they watch as well. Hence there is very minimal physical or any outdoor activity to be carried out. Children who are obese are likely to be obese as adults. Thus, they are more at risk for adult health problems such as Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, cancer etc. Not to forget, these obese children are also prone to develop emotional or psychological problems as well.
There could be many reasons which reduced the social interaction among the children. The major reason is lack of adequate care or attention from the parents. Children normally will try to imitate or mimic the parents in all its activities. In the modern world, both the parents work in more than 60% of households and they spend either less time or doesn’t spend time with their children at all. Children do have enormous amount of free time at home but as parents, we struggle to engage them. So, they end up spending prolonged hours in front of the television.
Way forward in arresting this trend are as follows:
Firstly, spend time and engage them in a daily physical activity such as walking, jogging or even playing with the kid indoor and outdoors. It could be any game but the intent is to get some physical activity.
Secondly, the parents can involve children in house hold chores by sharing responsibility. This will make them accountable for some of the tasks and will cultivate the habit of being responsible as well as will get the physical activity instead of glued in front of TV.
To conclude, It is the parents who can make a change in the way a child is brought up. This can be achieved only by spending a lot of time with the kid and engaging them in various physical activities.
The situation is grim in India as well where I reside. Particularly in urban areas where modernisation has put sophisticated media viewing means in eaach household. Advances in smartphone technology has worsen the situation even more. Cheap availability of Set-Top boxes, tablets have taken a toll on kids, specially kids aged between 4 & 10. Children aged between 10 to 15 do still have a little control over thier television viewing, as these kids at this point of time have started making friends and spending time with them outside. But as I said kids between 4 & 10 are more glued to the TV sets more to view thier favourtie cartoon programs.
As far as rural areas are considered the impact of television is less on kids of any range. This is just because of the fact that in terms of technology reaching far and wide, India still lags when it comes to rural areas. So kids in rural areas are spending more time outside thier homes playing rather than sitting in thier homes with modern compact devices such as tablets, smartphones and Television sets.
In my opinion this is a serious issue as children who spend more time watching television, playing games in tablets and smartphones are prone to physical and mental strain. They while doing so develeop weaker eye sight, grow introvert in nature, interact less with people and may be are weaker physically than thier rural counterparts who while indulging in outdoor games get to exercise thier body well.
This problem has only one solution and that is parents having greater control over thier childen’s day to day activities. They should impose daily time table for viewing television, playing with thier smartphones or playing outside of thier abode. They should encourage thier kids to indulge in activities like sports, indoor games like chess and carrom, may be enroll them to karate classes etc.
** please i would like to get this rated and given marks for it
** i would be very grateful if you do so.
** Thanks in advance
